History of NATODuring the Cold War the USA, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Canada, France, Portugal, Norway, Belgium and Italy founded the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. These countries promised each other to help to defend against any attacks made by the Soviet Union.
In 1955 West Germany joined the NATO and the Soviet Union had to respond to that. They did this by setting up a Warsaw Pact which you will learn more about later on. NATO also based a large military force in West Germany as a response to the Warsaw Pact in which the Soviet Union played a big part. |

The Warsaw PactThe Warsaw Pact was founded in 1955 as you have read above as an answer to the founding of NATO. It was called the Warsaw Pact because the communistic countries came together in Warsaw, Poland.
Even though it was to help all the communistic countries when there was a treat, the Soviet Union however ran everything. They were the ones who build up a massive army and stationed it all around the Soviet Union. They were also the ones who had nuclear power. |
