What is the Soviet Union: 01
Russia used to be a country with a Tsar at the head of the government. Just like in the Netherlands where we have either a king or a queen at the head of the government. Only in Russia the Tsar had a lot of power. In 1917 there were a series of revolutions that made sure the Tsar was removed form power. The man leading the revolutions was a communist named Lenin. He came to power and reformed the country. He also gave Russia its new name: the Soviet Union.
The government got all the power and everything was made equal. That meant that companies worked for the government and the government dictated what they should produce. The reformation did not go as planned because there were still people loyal to the old Tsar. Together with the British, French and American armies they tried to get their power back. That did not go as planned. The red army, which was led by Trotski, fought back the 'whites'.

What is the Soviet Union: 02
Lenin and his successor Stalin were communists and they had plans to spread communism to other countries. Western Europe and the United States got really frightened by these plans. These countries had a democracy; they were free countries and had a lot of money. These countries are more known as capitalists. After 1917 these free countries saw the Soviet Union as an enemy.
