The split of Berlin
After the second World War Germany became a divided country. America, Great Britain and France owned the west part of Germany and the Soviet Union owned the east part. Even Berlin, the capital of Germany became divided. All of the four countries had their own piece of Berlin.
The eastern part of Berlin was communistic because that part was owned by the Soviet Union. People were not happy with this and tried to flee to West Germany because they were capitalistic and had a growing economy. To stop people from fleeing East Germany the Red Army threw down a blockade. This blockade was made of barbed wire and it also prevented transport of food and fuel. To get the food to the people the allied army used an airlift to get food to millions of people. This went on until 1949 when the Soviet Union opened up the roads again.
